Organisasi Satelit Internasional INTELSAT telah memenankan lelang penjualan Satelit Protostar-I dimana pemilik lamanya, ProtoStar Ltd telah dinyatakan bangkrut oleh Pengadilan Amerika Serikat. Harga pembelian secara tunai yang disetujui adalah US$ 210 juta, yang akan diselesaikan dalam waktu 30-hari mendatang, setelah disetujui oleh Pengadilan AS di Delaware.

Perusahaan ProtoStar Ltd dibentuk pada tahun 2005 di Bermuda, Kepulauan Bahama. Satelit Protostar-I diluncurkan pada bulan Juli 2008 dan masih memiliki umur selama 16-tahun dan dikhususkan untuk layanan pemancaran Siaran TV langsung ke Rumah (Direct-to-Home, DTH) untuk wilayah Asia.

Satelit milik ProtoStar Ltd lainnya, yaitu Protostar-II yang diluncurkan pada bulan Juli 2009 yang lalu, dimana rencananya akan dipakai untuk Siaran TV ke Rumah di wilayah Indonesia oleh INDOVISION pada pita 2,5 GHz, masih belum ada kepastian pembelinya. Satelit itu juga memiliki pemancar pada pita Ku (11/14 GHz) yang cakupannya mengganggu pita frekwensi yang sama di wilayah Eropa.

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Fixed satellite services provider Intelsat Ltd said it was selected as the successful bidder at a bankruptcy auction for the ProtoStar 1 satellite with an all cash offer of $210 million.

Intelsat said the deal, which is subject to certain regulatory and bankruptcy court approvals, is expected to close within the next 30 days.

Bermuda-based ProtoStar Ltd filed for bankruptcy protection along with its five affiliates in July and said it was looking to sell its satellites through a court-supervised auction.

ProtoStar was formed in 2005 to launch and operate high-power geostationary satellites to lease capacity to Asian direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television and broadband service providers.

Upon conclusion of the deal, ProtoStar 1, built by Space Systems Loral, will be re-named Intelsat 25. Launched in July 2008, the satellite is expected to have a 16-year life span.
